Are you an experienced perioperative Registered Nurse with a passion for orthopaedic surgery? The Orthopaedic Institute (TOI) at Macquarie University Hospital is looking for a skilled Scrub/Scout Registered Nurse to join our dedicated surgical team on a permanent part-time basis.

The Orthopaedic Institute brings together over 30 orthopaedic surgeons, a dedicated nursing team, education and research to deliver outstanding surgical outcomes. Due to increasing patient volumes, we are expanding our perioperative team to ensure we continue to provide the highest standard of care across our growing caseload. This is an exciting time to join TOI as we invest in additional staffing to meet demand and further strengthen our surgical capability.

About the Role

As a Scrub/Scout Registered Nurse within The Orthopaedic Institute, you will play a critical role in the delivery of safe, effective perioperative care across a diverse range of orthopaedic procedures. Working in partnership with surgeons, anaesthetists and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will ensure each patient receives seamless, high-quality care throughout the intraoperative phase.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing scrub and scout duties across a broad range of orthopaedic surgical procedures, ensuring optimal patient safety and surgical efficiency
  • Anticipating surgeon needs, preparing and managing surgical instrumentation, implants and equipment for orthopaedic cases
  • Maintaining accurate surgical counts and documentation in accordance with MQ Health policy and professional standards
  • Applying evidence-based infection prevention and control practices within the perioperative environment
  • Contributing to the orientation and support of new team members, students and less experienced staff within theatres
  • Participating in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits and policy development within the perioperative unit
  • Demonstrating flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including weekends, as part of a rotating roster

This is a permanent part-time position with flexibility in hours discussed at interview. You must have availability across a rotating roster including weekends.

You are a confident and adaptable perioperative nurse who thrives in a fast-paced surgical environment. You bring strong technical skills in scrub and scout nursing, a genuine passion for orthopaedic surgery, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve outstanding patient outcomes.

Selection Criteria

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
  • Minimum 2 years' perioperative experience in a scrub/scout role, with demonstrated experience in orthopaedic surgical procedures highly desirable
  • Sound knowledge of orthopaedic instrumentation, implants and surgical techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, exercise independent professional judgement and think critically under pressure
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with a proven ability to prioritise in a fast-paced theatre environment
  • Flexibility to work a rotating roster across a variety of shifts, including weekends
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work positively within a team
